Mini Session Extraveganza

Hello friends,
I just wanted to let everyone know about my first ever Mini Session Extravaganza! It will be held in Lubbock, Texas on August 5-7. This is a great opportunity for busy families to get some great photos in a shorter time.
So how does it work?
Well, we will get together at a beautiful location (believe it or not, I know of some places in Lubbock that have green grass!!!). We will then take about an hour to get some great photos. Within the next few days I will enhance your photos and create a digital collection of 10 photos for you to choose your 2 11x14s and 8x10 metallic prints.
What if I have very rambunctious kids and I don't think they will behave for photos?
My style of photography is great for rambunctious kids. I absolutely love true to life shots that capture your families personality. Of course we can get some traditionally posed portrait shots, but why stop there. I'm not afraid of capturing the amazing inquisitiveness that many children posses! Check out this session of a very inquisitive little boy. We got some wonderful shots and had a great time getting them... He just thought he was playing with a new friend-- and maybe he was ;).
What if I'm not photogenic?
A: Everyone says that and B: It's just your job to be you and my job to make you look good... Which I'm sure you will ;)
What do I wear?
Most importantly something that you feel comfortable in, and that makes you feel good about yourself. When trying to coordinate photos for a group you don't want to get to many people wearing busy patterns. If the patterns conflict it will be too much for they eye, if they are too matchy-matchy you might look like wall paper! Here are a few samples of cute outfits that work well together:

Be careful with too much white if it is a bright day because it can make everyone look like one big body with a bunch of heads! The above photo worked wonderful because it was an overcast day.

Earthy tones with bright accents.
Basically you want to think of a color scheme and go with that... But rules are meant to be broken when you know how to break them. If you think it looks great then chances are it probably will.
What if I want more than the three photos that come with the Mini Session Extravaganza?
No problem! I will compile a digital collection of 10 enhanced photos from which you can order as much as you want! I also offer canvas prints, greeting and holiday cards, metal prints, enlargements and much more!

Oklahoma City Photography

Guess what?? This blog is about to be reinvented! I serendipitously met two women at Starbucks today who are going to help me get my blog looking a whole lot better. The thing I am most looking forward to is having larger photos for you to view! :)
Until then, I think I am going to keep this blog a little minimalistic for now so to see the most up-to-date albums please visit the Facebook page.

Charissa and Nathanael - Lubbock Family Photography

Being raised in a family of 3 sisters and having only one boy cousin on my dad's side I am used to-- well, girls. So, shooting Charissa and Nathanael was really fun to me. Little boys are just little bodies of energy and enthusiasm. Everywhere we went Nathanael was so excited to explore and check things out.
He was also incredibly smart. He is only 4, but he has a very large vocabulary maybe because his momma is a teacher;). To top it off this guy know his dinosaurs. Now I know you can say that about a lot of little boys, but Nathanael has a substantially sized dinosaur book in which he knows the names of every dinosaur!
When we were in the car driving to a new location he would show me a page with a dinosaur on it and say, "Do you know what this dinosaur is?" I could see the name printed pain as day on the page, but the names were so big, I couldn't pronounce them so I would just tell him that I didn't know, to which he would reply, "that's a Parasaurolophus." (Seriously can you believe a 4 year old can say words like that!)
When he finally landed on the page of a dinosaur who's name I could say, I said, "That's a Raptor."
To which this little guy said, "OH! That's right! GOOD JOB!!!" It was too cute. I have to say that his response probably says a lot about how encouraging of a mother Charissa is.

Priest/Huffhines Wedding- Hale Center Texas

Well, I know this is a little late for posting Victoria and Jeremy's wedding, but you can't say I didn't warn you. I had a lot of sessions to keep up with lately, and one of my priorities is getting photos ready for clients as soon as I can. :)
The ceremony and reception took place at First Baptist Church in Hale Center, Texas, where Jeremy grew up. The ceremony was very sweet and included Jeremy playing the piano and singing a song he wrote for Victoria!

This is Victoria's grandpa- I just love this moment!

Victoria and Jeremy hired Domesticakes in Lubbock to make their cakes. And let me tell you they were wonderfully beautiful! The grooms cake was a guitar! You can see that here.

More Van Darien

Hello everyone,
I am finally starting to reign in the masses of photos to sort, edit, and share so I figured I would do a quick blog post today. The following photos are from a live gig session at The Glass Cactus with the amazingly talented vocalist and song writer, Van Darien. Also playing with Van were Hot As Love, a Rock roots 3 piece band from Ft. Worth. Personally I think they should just combine forces for good, because they all had great chemistry and fun together. I've seen Van play with quite a few people, but these guys were by far my favorite --HINT, HINT to the Hot As Love boys ;)
Van had me come out from Lubbock to shoot the show. While we had some free time before the show I just couldn't resist taking a few portrait photos around The Glass Cactus, it is such a beautiful venue, with class to spare! Luckily for me Van is always a willing participant and so we wandered around and took photos. I have to tell you, we got some great shots! :) It does help when the subject is so beautiful and confident ;)

Word of Advice

I have a bit of advice for all of you. Never, never, N-E-V-E-R pray for patience. When we, as impatient people pray for patience what we really mean, is "God, I want patience and I want it now!" But that is not what God does. God being the smart, and sometimes ironic, being that he is gives us opportunities in which to practice patience.
So a couple of weeks ago when I was noticing how impatient I had become I thought I would ask for a little help. I already knew that I should not pray for patience- honestly, I couldn't handle all the practice. So I specifically said, "God, please help me with my patience." But you know what!? God did not hear "please help me" he heard "please make my life extremely difficult", and that is exactly what started happening. I couldn't get simple tasks done without great difficulty, and then, the worst thing happened... my computer crashed. My computer with all my precious photos, logo, website stuff, short stories, anything and everything was suddenly gone in the blink blink of an eye, and a terrible clicking noise.
The worst part was only 4 days before I had a very strong conviction I needed to back up my computer, but life was busy and I forgot! So I drove the 2 hours to Amarillo (there are no certified Mac people in Lubbock!) to try and get my files recovered. After several hours I received a phone call to inform me that my file could not be recovered. :(
Normally, I would have freaked out. Now, I will admit that I cried a little when it first happened, but at that moment it was just reality. It sucked, and it meant I would be doing a lot of work to redo just about everything, but there was no sense crying over spilled milk. (I guess God did hear the please "help" me part). So I remained calm, but a little depressed. I found ways to look at the bright side of the situation, and then, you will never guess what happened! I got home and my AMAZINGLY, WONDERFUL, BRILLIANT husband recovered my files from the old hard drive! The thing that stuck to me the most is that whether I would have worried about it or not, the outcome would have been the same. I could have thrown an adult tantrum, or cried, or yelled, or made myself sick with worry and the outcome would have been exactly the same (either way, good or bad). My reaction to situations, usually, only change my mental well being, and the way I portray myself to others.
I know I am still a work in progress and will be until the day that I die, but I am glad that I have been learning some valuable lessons. So with that in mind today I leave you not with photos but with two things to think about-
1: Where hard drives are concerned it is not a matter of if it will crash, but when it will crash. BACK UP YOUR FILES- NO EXCUSES!! It is a horrible feeling to suddenly lose so much.

and

2: “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?

“And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you... Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own." Matt. 6: 25-34

Chelsea- Trash the Dress- Gibtown, Texas

It's always great to get to go visit my family and friends, but I have to admit it is even better when I have a photo session to do while I'm there. Especially when it involves a beautiful girl who wants to do a trash the dress session.
If you have not heard of a TTD session yet then let me explain. A TTD session is a session that takes place sometime after the wedding (in this case 2 years after the wedding!). The basic concept is that you no longer have to worry about getting the dress dirty so you can go get the photos you were afraid to take beforehand. Some TTD sessions are also about actually "trashing" the dress to get fun, artistic, and unique photos.
With this session we had originally planned on actually running a horse through a pond and playing mud football with the dogs. However, once we started shooting we got so many great images and decided that we would not actually "trash" the dress, much to the relief of the Chelsea's mom! ;)
The resulting images were... well... see for your self :)

Curtis and Jess- Plainview, Texas

Man, it's been a long week. I had planned on posting these photos last week, but it's been crazy. I finally had enough time today to stop in at Broadway Brew today for some yummy coffee and internet access, which when you don't have it at your house is also yummy! So I'm going to get these posted wile I have the chance.

These are photos of two of my best friends, who just so happen to be pretty amazing. FYI they are dating, but not engaged, we just decided to go out and shoot some photos. Jess kept warning me that she isn't photogenic, but I think she was wrong, but I'll let you decide for yourself.

By the way, if you happen to stop in at "The Brew" in Plainview, Texas you should try my latest favorite-- a praline late. It is very tasty both hot and iced!

OH- also- I am working on getting the website updated, but until then this blog and the facebook page are the best place to get a peak at the most current photos. :)

Be passionate

There are several things I'm passionate about. In fact, I consider myself a pretty passionate person in general. One of the things I am very passionate about is my photography. I absolutely love to go out and shoot. I am continually trying out different things to help myself improve, or pouring over photos online to see what I find inspiring. When I don't take photos for a while I'm like a person giving up chocolate! So a couple of days after I shot Victoria and Jeremy's engagement photos I found myself wanting to go out and take more photos.

Which leads me to another thing I am very passionate about, the subject of these photos, my best friend and husband, Justin. Before Justin and I got together I would always say that I didn't want to date. Dating was just a way for two people to act like someone they are not. I wanted to be best friends with someone and that be who I married.

Little did I know God was listening closely to the desires of my heart. Justin and I met at a skate park ministry in Plainview and became best friends. In fact we were friends for 3 1/2 years before we went on our first date, at The Double Nickle! We both knew from the moment we became a couple that we were with the person we would marry. Honestly, I knew way before that, but it took him a little while to figure it out. ;)

So today, before I show you these photos I just want to say that I am beyond blessed by the husband I have. He truly is my best friend. He has been so patient and kind through the process of discovering my Celiac disease (and before we figured it out when I was sick all the time). He has so many attributes that I hope rub off on me. :) I also love that often when I'm editing photos I can here him in his studio creating some ingenious music. Or listening to him do ridiculously funny voices while we're driving down the road. Basically I just really enjoy living my life with my best friend.

Sorry I know that was longer than normal, but here ya' go.

Did I forget to mention he is handsome too!?

Hale Center, Tx. engagement

When I decided to go to school in West Texas 5 years ago I never imagined how blessed I would be by the people that I met in college. Now looking back I can't imagine my life without the great friends I made during that time in my life.
One of these people is my friend Victoria. She has become one of my best friends so am am extremely excited to be shooting not only her engagement photos, but also her wedding! The photos below were taken in Hale Center (around town and at Jeremy's family's farm). It was a bit of a challenge, and we were forced to take shelter behind fences and buildings since the West Texas wind was up to no good. They were both great sports though and it was definitely worth it in the end.

Senior Portrait Packages

Inspire and Encourage

I am so excited to finally get to share one of my projects with everyone. I wanted to tell everyone sooner, but I also wanted to make sure it was going to work out before I posted anything about it.
Starting this month I will be visiting some of the local High Schools (local being Lubbock and surrounding areas) for my “Working in the Arts” project, which is an interactive lecture for High School Juniors and Seniors.
I’m will be sharing practical tips, tricks, and information that I have learned since setting off on my adventure in photography. This includes things ranging from how to get financial aid for college to how to network for your business.
I hope to inspire students to go out and try their hand at whatever they are passionate about. Even if that is not an art career, I believe that much of the information I’m going to share is transferable for other fields as well (though obviously my realm of knowledge comes from photography). I hope that students will be inspired and confident to get out there and do something. To proactively be involved in the making of their future. I also hope to share information that is practical enough to be used as a runway to help get them started on their own adventures!

4 days with Van

I have spent far more time on this blog post than I normally do! However there are convenient links located throughout the entire post to enhance your blog reading experience. ;) So don't be scared, dive right in and I'll try my best not to bore you-- and I promise some photos at the end-- there's even one with me in it, and that is RARE! :)

Last Sunday my good friend, Van Darien, flew in for a visit. I was so glad she was able to come to Nashville before we moved. The city reminds me of her quite frequently.
Random Facts about Van:
*She has been singing since she was REALLY young
*She writes her own song (with the exception of maybe one or two that she co-wrote)
*She used to run Karaoke
*We have been friends for 11 years!
She is an artistic, quirky, free spirited sort of girl, which might be one of the big reasons we are such good friends.

I hadn't heard Van sing in quite a while and had forgotten how much I love her voice. However, I was quickly reminded on Monday night when we went to Bluebird Cafe for a songwriters night. Our friend Zach Swift also came out to Bluebird and being the talented guy he is- sang as well. (Make sure you check out both Van and Zach!)

Van and I also went exploring in Nashville and found some really cool stores, which knowing Nashville, is not surprising, but it's still fun. Hillsoboro Village is one of my go to places and is full of unique stores. I particularly like Fire Finch Boutique. If you have not visited Fire Finch you really need to stop by, it showcases a great assortment of little treasures, cute jewelry, and 2 adorable kitties!

Gorgeous Heather

Well, I just finished up a "mini photo session" with the gorgeous Heather. I met her out at Juro Stables where we both volunteered, at the time. We had been talking for a while about doing a session and I am so glad we got around to it before I move to Texas. She is a great model and we got some wonderful photos. And Let me tell you, she was a trooper, because it was a COLD and she was wearing a dress!

The dog days of winter

I am sitting here in my cozy apartment watching my puppies snooze on the couch and the snow fall outside. I am in really high spirits right now, after a great weekend full of both rest and accomplishment... I feel great. We've been working on getting the house packed, and I've been brainstorming some fun ideas for the business when I we get moved to Lubbock. I can't wait until we get settled in somewhere and I can get some of this stuff moving along.
I also have a snowy portrait session to shoot today, which will be very fun. I was lucky enough, not only to have someone book for a snow session, but also to own the exact cloths I was thinking would be great for the photos! I'll be posting them soon!
Oh, and here are a few fun photo booth photos of me and the fur babies hanging out in the apartment staying warm.

Exciting News

Experimental Photos- round 1

Recently I was inspired to do a very particular shoot. I had the vision in my head exactly how I wanted it. It floated around in my brain like a little sail boat, sometimes getting hidden behind other thoughts like a big wave, and other times it would be in full view. But as ideas tend to go the longer I let the thought linger without taking action the more it was hidden behind those thought waves and I saw it less and less at the forefront of my minds eyes.
Finally, I decided to take action, like Mr. Scott Belsky (founder of Behance) more than strongly suggests in his book Making Ideas Happen (which in case you were wondering I am currently reading). So I gathered up my husband (who modeled for me), my camera, flashlight, and a few other things and we set out to take some photos. I am definitely going to re-do these when a get more appropriate equipment, but I am really happy with what I got on the first go round.

Ashlei and Dustin Lewis- Wedding

As you already know I shot my first wedding recently. Not counting the time I was a second shooter for Kathy Ziegler: you can see that shoot HERE.
I have to say that this was a wonderful experience. I was of course very nervous before hand, but as soon as I started shooting I had so much fun, and I couldn't have asked for a better couple to shoot for a first wedding. The wedding took place at Garner Baptist Church, where Ashlei grew up. The reception was at Clark Gardens (make sure to check out the link- Clark Gardens is quite lovely).

The bride, Ashlei, and I were best friends way back in Junior High, but we had mostly lost touch through out the years. It was great to get to see her and her family again. I don't know why but it always seems a little funny to see the once little sibling(s) all grown up. Like you expect them to not have changed since the last time you saw them 7 years ago or something. ha ha (Yes Tanner, that's a shout out to you- congrats on growing up) :) But now I'm chasing rabbit trails...

Ashlei and Dustin were absolutely wonderful. They were so laid back and happy, and cute, all of which make my job a lot easier. The thing I loved the most is how much Ashlei had not changed. She was so happy and full of life like the little kid I had know so many years ago. Her mom said it best as we were on our way to the hair stylist, "Ahlei has fun. She never misses a chance to have fun and laugh." This statement really struck me; I thought it was such a beautiful thing and absolutely true. Ashlei is always laughing and smiling and goofing off- she really does have a good time even doing the most mundane things.

I bet by now you are just dying to meet this fun and cute girl and her laid back and cute husband... so I'll stop talking and let you take a look.

Cowboy Cade

I was in Weatherford, Texas recently to shoot a wedding (photos to come). It's always good to be in Weatherford since this is the area I grew up. I love getting to see old friends and familiar faces, and places for that matter- although, I've discovered that I get lost in Weatherford now. It has grown tremendously since I left back in 2005- went off to college I did (that's my Yoda voice via type) ;)
Anyway while I was in Texas to shoot a wedding I also got the opportunity to shoot an absolutely adorable boy and his horse Harry (who my mom raised!). I had such a good time with these guys. Cade was so cute and I don't know if he would admit it but I think he had a blast taking photos. He even had a few ideas of his own. I hope you guys enjoy these as much as I did.

A peek into my life. -Celiac Disease-

I always struggle with writing personal entries on a blog. I've attempted this several times, and most of the time delete it or else I am so worried about what I write about that the outcome is completely different then the original intent. (I'm already on attempt # 3 for this post)!
Basically, I just want to share a few things that are going on in my life right now. First of all I am desperately trying to become a more organized person. It has never been a strong point of mine (and I think the artist in me makes it worse), but never-the-less I am trying to get this down better. Slowly but surely I feel like I am starting to make progress, but it can be difficult. My hubby is an artist too (a musician to be exact) so between the two of us we have a lot of "toys" to find places for. Sometimes I'm tempted to turn my whole house into a studio instead of trying to contain it in one room/closet.
Besides becoming more organized I am also preparing for my first official wedding. Yes I posted wedding photos in my last post, but those were from a session where I was second shooting. The wedding this weekend is a wedding I was hired for by the client! I am very excited and of course a bit nervous, but I know it is going to go great. I can't wait to see all the shots I get!
And finally, I wanted to share a bit about Celiac disease. I can't remember if I've mentioned it on the blog, but about 3 or 4 months ago I discovered that I have Celiac disease, which is basically an auto immune disorder that caused damage to your small intestine if you consume gluten.
I had been feeling very sick for quite some time so it was a huge relief to find out what was going on. And although it's never great to have something wrong with you, I am very luck in the fact that all I have to do is not eat gluten. It is really hard since gluten is in just about everything, but I don't have to take pills, for this I am thankful. (BTW. gluten is a protein found in wheat, barley, rye, and anything processed with these). It is in regular breads, pastas, cereal, baked goods- these are the obvious things. But then you find out that it can be in things like shredded cheese, processed meats, etc. aaaannnddd, your G free food can be cross contaminated by non- G free food! Basically it is like running through a maze to get food. Non processed meats, fruits, and veggies are all ok, but getting these things on the go and not getting them cross contaminated is a very hard task.
So as I prepare for my upcoming trip I packed my cloths, my makeup, my camera, and A TON OF G FREE FOOD! (Apples, nuts, bean salad, nut thins, horizon milk, lara bars....) I'm pretty sure that I seem like a crazy person since I can often be found sneaking food out of my purse rather than eating the yummy restaurant food. But- Such is life, and particularly my life. I will consider it more of a blessing than a curse since I don't have to take meds and I get to eat super healthy food.

I love when you can tell that siblings love each other, and that's how this family was. Besides the fact that they were all adorable, making my job very easy! :D

Ok, I know I've been a bit slow at this, but I am finally posting some photos from the wedding I helped Kathy with a few weeks back. You can check out Kathy's great revamped blog here.
I will be shooting my first wedding in, well, 8 days to be exact. So I was very thankful to have this opportunity to shoot with another professional. I loved seeing how Kathy interacted with the wedding party, how she posed people, and how she positioned herself amongst everything to get those great shots.
I also learned something else. I love weddings. I love all the pretty decorations. I love all the family and friends. I love the speeches. I love the kisses. And I love the love. I love seeing two people smile just because they see each other. So I expect to be working toward doing some more wedding photography in the future.
Also, I realize I probably posted more photos than anyone beside the bide would want to see, but what can I say, I'm excited!
So here are some of the shots from Brian and Elizabeth's wedding.
P.S. Kathy and I loaded our photos onto one computer so there were one or two photos that I was not 100% sure were mine, because there were a few that we got very similar shots of. I feel pretty confident they were mine, but just in-case I am wrong I want to once again redirect you to Kathy's blog. Ok, I know I said I would be posting wedding photos next, but... well. actually I'm not today. I will have them soon, I promise-- but I don't have them today. I just have to get the CD from the photographer I shot with.
I do have something else though! Photos from my photo session with some friends from Texas. I've known Dann and Leann for quite some time now, so I had some prior knowledge of them to work from when planning their session. I knew they had met, and actually started their relationship at WBU library. They both have a great love for books and knowledge so I wanted to incorporate that into a few of their photos.
Justin and I flew into Lubbock on a Thursday night and woke up bright and early Friday to take photos! I didn't have the locations picked out since I had not been in town, but I had a pretty good idea of where I wanted to go and what I wanted to accomplish. So we jumped in the car and drove down town and found a few great places and then headed back to the library at Wayland for a few photos outside. It turned out to be a really fun session and I am so glad that I was given the opportunity to capture two of my friends who have a very deep love for one another.

Ok, I'm just kidding. I know it isn't very obvious. It does, however, have purpose. Today, I am second shooting with Kathy Ziegler at a wedding here in the Nashville area. I am so excited to get to watch her in action, and pick up a lot of new tips and tricks-- and of course to be getting some great photos myself. This is going to be a great opportunity and I'm just going to soak it all in. I obviously don't have any photos to show you yet, so until then I'll post a couple of photos from my own wedding that my sweet friend, Sarah took for us.

Hello All,
I just thought I would give a little update on life and business right now. I am currently working on updating the website newer photos. It is a bit messy right now, but it will be nice once I get it all done. I'm not sure what category I should put some of the photos in, so I may end up reworking it again anyway, but I'll figure it out.
I'm also getting really excited about shooting a wedding with Photographer, Kathy Ziegler this Saturday. I am really looking forward to watching her in action. I've always been able to learn a lot by watching other people at work. So I am anticipating picking up a lot of handy tips and tricks.
Other than that, I've got a lot of fun stuff around the corner (a friends wedding, a Texas photo session with two of my good friends, and moving to a bigger apartment). That last one is really exciting since my hubby and I outgrew this apartment a while back- you know you need more space when your bikes are stored in you living room! I think we are both pretty excited about having an extra room as well. We are going to turn it into a studio space for the both of us! Which means.... I'll actually have a place to hang photos that I've taken for photo sessions (I figured it would be a little odd to have photos of other people's children hanging around our house!)- but now I will have a little studio space where I can display some of my work!
I guess that is basically it around here. I'm feeling great today (energy!) so I am looking forward to today- I think it's gonna be a good one!

I think I'm talking to myself on that one- I am seriously lacking motivation today. I think I am actually blogging to procrastinate a little longer before I have to start bossing myself around. Ha Ha. Anyway, I am really excited about a lot of stuff right now. First of all I will be second shooting at my first wedding really soon! Secondly, I have been learning a ton of stuff. And finally, I have now seen the effects of all that learning. My last photo session was probably the best I've ever done. I was so excited to see what I've been learning put into action. I just want to go out and take photos again as soon as I can!
Any way that's about it. I don't really have anything new photos to post for today so I guess I'll just leave it at that.

So I just have to say today was awesome. I love getting to sleep in a little and getting to hang out with my hubby. We took our two pups to the dog park today which is always a ton of fun. Dogs are just so cute, and funny, and diverse. Sometimes I think that if people were more like dogs the world would probably be a lot better--well, more like some dogs I guess. They are always so happy to make a new friend, and they love you just because you are you.
Other than that my friend Michelle and I went to Nashville for a photo session. We found some great spots. While we were driving we pulled up to a stop light and there was a man beside us pulling a little open U-Haul trailer with a donkey in it! I swear I'm telling you the truth, it was so cute, and funny. I have a pic. on my phone, but it's a pain to get it from my phone to my computer (I don't have one of them their fancy iphones. ha ha). Anyway we got some GREAT photos!!! I am so excited! Here's a little teaser photo.

I had an absolutely wonderful time with this family. I felt like I was hanging out with my own family while I was taking their photos. When we left Kingfisher to go to Big Four there were some intense storm clouds rolling in and I was a little afraid it was going to be way too dark to get many photos. However, we all worked together and got a lot of stuff done really fast (moving cars, posing, moving cars again, getting into different groups, they even brought a ladder out to the field for me!) I don't really have much more to say besides, beautiful family, beautiful cars, and lots and lots of fun!

While I was in Oklahoma I had the pleasure of shooting these two cutie pies. I took this family's photos last summer and got some really great photos. This year we met out at the Stars and Stripes Park on Hefner lake and took photos of the kids. It was so exciting to see how big the baby had gotten. Last year she couldn't even sit up by herself, and this year she was running around being a cute inquisitive kid. I also got to take a few karate photos of the oldest girl and her dad, but I'm going to post those next time, because they are really great and deserve an entry of their own!

I need to catch up-- with the blog at least. I have so many photos I have not had the time to post. This month has been Ka-ray-zee! So now I'm playing catchup on the blog.
While I was in Texas last month I went to a barrel jack pot (for those of you who don't know that is a contest where cowgirls, and sometimes cowboys, run a pattern on their horse. Who ever has the fastest time wins) and met an adorable cowgirl named Aubrey. We decided to do a photo session of her with her horses and dog. We woke up so early to get started that I think we were both regretting the idea just a little bit, but as soon as I loaded these photos I knew we had made the right decision. :D We got some great shots!

The following session is from a sweet family in Texas. You might recognize some of these faces from the last session I posted-- because they are an extension of the Spurlock family. Strawberry, decided that while I was out for a photo session, she would like to sign up as well! So we set up a mini session and did it back to back with the other session!
This family was absolutely precious. Between the baby, the cute girls, and a big brother who adores his siblings, I just couldn't get enough! I really loved shooting these guys, to see the love that flowed between every one of them was such a blessing.

Tweed carries clothing for children up to 24 months as well as toys, and more. If you are in the Nashville area and you have kids, nieces, nephews, you know people with children... go to Tweed. Find an excuse and go take a look. I am sure you will be presently surprised. Tweed is located in Edgehill Village next to family friendly Taco Mamacita.

While your in Tweed take a look at the artwork hanging on the walls. These unique paintings are from a local artist, Leigh Ann Agee. You can see more of her work on her website. She paints some amazing murals, and has a studio right down the hall from Tweed.

Playing catch-up

It seems like I've been playing catch-up ever since I got back from Texas. I guess that is what happens when you are gone for two weeks straight and have 7 sessions booked. I swear I've done at least 8 loads of laundry in the last three days!
Anyway, there have been some pretty exciting things going on lately so I thought I'd share.
First of all, I was so excited when I was driving down the road the other day and heard a song I thought sounded familiar, so I turned it up... and IT WAS ONE OF MY BEST FRIENDS VANESSA (aka. Van Darien)! She has been hard at work trying to promote her music. While I was in Texas I got the chance to do a photo session with Van. I received an email from her a couple of days ago saying that they were going to be using several of the photos for promotional material...aaaannnndd she is going to put my photography logo on the photos! Check her out at REVERBNATION.
Second, I get the opportunity to be a second shooter at a wedding in September. I will be working with the talented Kathy Ziegler. I am so beyond excited about getting to learn from someone who has "been there, done that". Kathy has already given me several words of wisdom and pointed me in the direction of some great resources. I am thrilled to have the opportunity to get to know her. Kathy, is moving away from wedding photography and focusing more on pet photography and art. She is an amazing artist, whether its a camera or a pencil that she has in hand.
Thirdly (thirdly ha ha.. I don't think that is really a word)...(I just looked it up, and congratulations "thirdly", you are a word), I have to give a big thanks to Shari Zellers, an Atlanta based photographer who has given me a lot of advice, and recently helped me design a watermark, and by helped I mean she created it! Shari is a great photographer who I met at a Nashville PUG meeting. Shari will be getting married soon! (Congrats!) The amazing thing, is even despite the fact that she is working on getting her wedding in order she still took the time to help me. I think that speaks volumes about Shari's personality and kindness.
Finally, and as you already know the drawing for a free photo session is going on this month. Anticipation is building! I can't wait to see who will win.

Whoo hoo, just got another session done and ready to send out! These photos are from my session with Ami and Josh. Ami and I were attached at the hip for a little while in Jr. High, but I had not seen her since then (over 10 years ago!). We had formed a friendship based on our love for animals. I was so excited to see that she still has her passion for animals- as these photos will show. It was great to get to see her again. I had so much fun during this session, and I love the outcome! Ami and Josh are definitely one of those couples that you can tell have fun together and just enjoy being around each other.

Van Darien is a singer/songwriter from Weatherford, Texas. She has one of those rare voices that sounds better live than recorded, which personally I think is an amazing talent. Same old same old, BUT NOT!

As usual things are in full swing in this part of the woods. There is always something to be doing. I'm slowly coming to terms with the fact that nothing in life is easy and as soon as you start getting something going at a good pace something else will sneak up and bite you in the butt. It really makes me mad, but what can I do? The answer is absolutely nothing, besides have a positive attitude, so I guess that is what I need to do.
As far as new things go, I am currently working on setting up a drawing for a free photo session. To enter the drawing is absolutely free, you just have to go into the boutiques that are participating. I am really excited about this, and the opportunity to meet new people.

I'm swimming, Oh yeah!

It seems like I've been feeling overwhelmed a lot lately with trying to get all this business stuff going. I felt like I've just been writing the same old to do list over and over again, and not actually putting any of those lovely check marks beside anything.
Today, though, a wonderful thing happened. I had a little extra time so I started writing, yet again, one of those "to do" lists in a notebook I keep in my purse. While searching for a blank page I saw some of my old to do lists from the past month or so, and to my surprise, there was a lot that I could mark off. I saw one of my very first list from when I decided to change the name from "Photography by Megan Rieff"... too what?.... I didn't know. I saw a name I had come up with, that I really liked. I had a cool logo for it and everything, but then I came home and asked my hubby what he thought. He pointed out a flaw with it that I hadn't even noticed. He was totally right about it so I started brainstorming for more ideas.
As I flipped through the pages of that little black idea book, I saw where I had started and how far I have made it, and even though it seems like I'm just treading water most of the time- I'm not. I can't necessarily see that point that I want to be, but I can look back and see all those baby steps that really added up. I needed to see this, it rejuvenated me, it gave me more courage, more strength, more drive, and I am excited to see what I'm going accomplish in the coming month.

In honor of progress, here are some old pictures from when I was first starting to get into photography. I had simple little Nikon point and shoot, and I was in love with it.

Exciting, Busy, and Surprisingly Energized

This last week has been crazy. It seems like there have been a lot of ups and a lot of downs. First of all, as I mentioned in my last post I had the opportunity to speak with a great lady, Kathy Ziegler, who gave me a lot of great advice and told me about the PUG meetings in Nashville. Pug meetings, or Pictage User Meetings, are meetings of professional photographers, who get together and exchange tips and tools (basically). It is sponsored by Pictage, which I think that I will use when I get my business up and running a little more... which leads me on to my last point....
Last point: OH MY GOSH!!! I realized this week that I've been a little naive, and I have a lot to do to get caught up. I never really thought too much on the actual business side of things. I mostly thought that if I just got my work out there I would be able to make a career out of my photography... little did I know... I read some advice on one site that said that business and marketing has more determining power in your success then talent! HOLY COW! So, I've been researching, and I've been listening, and I've been trying to implementing as much of the good advice I've been getting as I can. Which leads me to the realization that I've lied, because I have "one last point" :P
At the PUG meeting I had the opportunity to get to meet a great photographer and amazing person, Shari Zellers, an award winning Atlanta photographer. She spoke at the PUG meeting and gave a lot of really great advice. On top of that, though, she has been emailing me; answering questions and helping me out with a lot of stuff. It has been humbling to see how much of her time and expertise she has shared with me. I used to struggle with the idea of how much do you help people who are in the same field as you. Particularly in photography, there are a lot of people trying to become photographers, and in that sense you are competing against them. (Not to say that I'm any where near the level that Shari or Kathy are, and in that sense I'm not really competition to them), but none the less, you have to think about how YOU are going to get the next client so that YOU can make money and pay YOUR bills- that other photographer isn't going to pay them for you. After this past week though, I know the answer, the answer that I should have known all along- "Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourself. Do not merely look out for your own personal interest, but also the interests of others."
So thank you Shari for all of the great advice, help, and time that you have invested in me. You have made a huge impact on me , and I know that you have made that same impact on so many others. Thank you for your kindness and helpfulness, you seriously are amazing!

Giving the gift of your time

Back in December I was sending out email after email to photographers asking if they were in need of an assistant or an intern. I was hoping that I would be able to get on with someone and learn from them, and in effect become a better photographer. One photographer that I emailed was Kathy Ziegler. She said that at that time she didn't have a need for an assistant, but to email her again in April.
Well April is here so I emailed her back. Unfortunately, she said that she was getting out of the photography business to pursue another one of her talents, pet portraits and equine artwork. You can definitely say that this lady is talented.
What was so great to me was that even though she is moving away from photography, and could have very easily ignored my email, she emailed and called me back. I am so grateful that she took some of her time and invested it in me, someone she has never even met. I was so refreshed by getting to talk with her and picking up a few pointers. Not only did I learn about a few things that I can work on in my photography, but I was also reminded of how much it means when we are willing to give some of our time to another person...
So this blog is all to say thank you Kathy for your time and your advice, I truly feel encouraged, and that is something that I needed desperately lately.

Our dog is moping around this morning expressing is disapproval and sorrow over my husband bathing him last night. He needed it though, weather he (the dog) thinks so or not. We took him out to a friends house last night where he played non-stop with our friend's dog. Needless to say, we didn't realize how wet it was, and wet grass and Australian Shepherd/Border collie hair is not the best mixture for an apartment dog.

Currently I am trying to get back in the groove of accomplishing more of my goals. It has been a crazy month. I was sick for, basically, 3 weeks straight. I am finally starting to feel better, thank you God, Zyrtec, and fruits and veggies! Now I can start getting things ready for the Organics project and if the weather holds up I will have my first Organics photos this weekend or next weekend! (So stay tuned!) I am very excited about this... a little nervous, but excited.

Okay, so I really sorry I haven't been posting. I don't consider this breaking my goal for blogging. The reason I stopped is because I'm still trying to meet people and get the photography business started in a new place. (It's a lot harder when you don't know anyone). Anyway, I decided that the blog was too lacking in purpose. HOWEVER, I recently had a photo session! These are the photos from Wes and Feathers engagement shoot. These two are a really cool laid back couple. They are both photographers as well and I had a ton of fun getting to do their photos.
This shoot was a little different for me in the fact that I was trying some new things; one of my goals was to get some vintage feeling pictures, I also did a little more in photoshop than I normally do. I had a ton of fun with the photos and I really felt confident that Wes and Feather would be able to appreciate something a little different. I hope you enjoy them!

Design for the new project.

First I want to say I'm really sorry it took me so long to actually get this post up, but today you really get to find out about the new project! The new project involves my photography and is called "Organics".
The basics to Organics is to do a series of photographs that capture people in a normal day of their life. The people photographed for Organics will not be expecting to be photographed. The way I'm going to accomplish this is by going to public places, such as parks, and asking people if they would like to have a short photo session done for free. I will tell them about the project and if they choose to do it they will get three free photos (in digital format). I will also send them the proofs from the shoot so they can order more photos if they would like.
The way this idea came about was a bit of a slow process. I have always found beauty in a lot of places where people don't expect it, notice it, or look for it. I have also become extremely aware of the ridiculous standards that we hold our selves to (as far as the way we should look goes). The people we try to look like don't even look the way we think they do. It's really just the result of manipulating every little detail in photoshop. (see link below)
Anyway, I've noticed that I see beauty where a lot of people don't and I wanted to find a way to capture that and share it. As well as wanting to help people see the true beauty of being a human. This desire combined with the need to get my name out in my new place of residence spawned the idea of Organics. It gives me something that I believe in to work on as well as getting my work out. I will still continue my work on Organics when I start getting some business, because like I said, it is something I believe in. I have a specific branch of the project focusing on girls in the works too.
That's about the basics of the thing. If you have any questions or thoughts feel free to ask. I'm sure I'll post more about this soon; the concept is so big in my head it is hard to get past all the exciting thoughts into a basic statement that someone would want to read. I'll be posting the first session soon!

Sometimes it's the tedious mundane things

Coming to terms with the fact that a business doesn't happen over night (for most of us anyway) can be a bit discouraging. At this point I have had to start my photography business 3 different times (due to moving). Each time you have to do a whole list of tedious things, along with the fact that you have to completely start fresh with clients if you don't know anyone. In the end, it really becomes about the mundane things, the little "hafta's" that get you where you're going. It makes the process seem longer, I think, but what are your options- sit and do nothing, that doesn't seem very promising. So this week, I am coming to terms with the fact that most things in life need a little time, and if you think your already done learning patience- it may be true, but your going to turn around and learn it again tomorrow.
I remember getting my nails done one day and the nail tech was asking me what I do. I told him that I'm an artist, and went on to explain that it can be really intimidating because there are so many talented people. He responded that I was right, but that it takes passion. Which is very true, there are a lot of people with talent and no passion who don't accomplish anything. It's the people with both that do. (I would even venture to add that sometimes more passion and perseverance accomplished greater things than more talent).

Goals (part 2) AND a random sketch!

This is a sketch a did at work. I was doodling with crayons and decided to try to sketch a photo of one of the kids that I work with. I was really happy with the outcome. Of course, it is just a sketch and not meant to be a finished piece. Also, I have a new found respect for crayons!

GOALS (part 2)
Okay, I know we all do it, we set goals/resolutions, and we start out really excited about them. We are completely determined to reach our goals... for a week, two weeks, a month, and then our fire dies out and we slowly go back to our old routine.
When I decided on my goals this time, I wanted to keep this thought in mind. So I wrote down a list of things that inspire me. While I was writing these down I realized, surprisingly, that the things that inspire don't necessarily lead to putting inspiration into action, and can in fact be used as a means to procrastinate. So, you guessed it, another list (things that move me to action), and finally, a list of things that stop/hinder action.
Here are my lists;

Goals (part 1)

A short story about goals: A couple of years ago I decided I would not take any summer classes, and therefore wanted to spend my summer working on and promoting my art. So I wrote down my goals. Under the goal Promote my art I wrote, as an off handed thought, "maybe I'll have an art show".
I did have an art show that summer. It was a lot of work, but it happened. I found possible venues, called them, and decided on Cap*Rock Winery in Lubbock, Tx. http://www.caprockwinery.com/
It was really a great accomplishment for me and required a ton of work and research, but I did it, and basically, all because of a little side note on my list of goals.

So, recently, when I started feeling very unproductive I turned back to this idea of listing goals.
I just set my goals on Saturday and it has already helped me out tremendously, so I thought I would share my method of goal setting.
My Method:
A. Large, long term goal (something that's not too easy, but that I can accomplish).
1. general ways to reach the long term goal
*Specifics: short term goals (usually weekly)
For example:
A. Learn more about my camera and photography
1. Read more photography books and magazines
2. See what other photographers are doing
3. Take more photos
Specifics:
*Minimum of 15 min. per day reading photography related material
*Take a minimum of 10 purposeful photographs per week.
The last specific things, are basically the short term, weekly goals to help accomplish the larger long term goal. I think this is very helpful because in the past I have set a goal, but then had absolutely no idea what to do to get to that point. To me, it is kinda like trying to get somewhere you have never been without looking at a map. A great example is back in November I decided that I would start a new blog (this blog actually) after I got married. It wasn't until this last Saturday when I wrote my goals (one of them being about the new blog) that I actually started on it. That means I it took me 3 months to start the blog from the initial idea, but only 2 days once my goals were set.
ALSO, while I was looking at other artists blogs for inspiration, I found one that inspired me quite a bit, and she (Maggie Stiefvater) also has some thoughts on goal. You definitely need to go check her blog out and see what she has to say. While your over there you should go ahead and look around, she is very talented in several art forms.

4. Writing is not at the top of my priorities right now, but I never have and excuse to be "bored" instead I will work on one of my stories.

*Sketch, purposefully, twice a week
*sketh ideas for paintings or drawings immediately (or AS SOON AS POSSIBLE), if the idea works, begin working on final rendering withing 10 days.

Just a bit of information.

Well, it always seems a little strange to get the ball rolling on a new thing. Right now I'm referring to this blog, in which I feel like I have no idea what to write. I'm sure it will get easier, as it seems most writing does, but right now I feel like a person trying to talk after an injection of Novocaine.
The reasonable thing to do, I assume, would be to start with something obvious, like who I am. My name is Megan Rieff. I am an artist in the Nashville area. I primarily work in photography, paint, and pencil, which I realize doesn't narrow it down that much. I was recently married, thereby creating a new name, and thus a new blog. However, I also started this blog with the desire to do a better job at blogging (consistently posting, more photos, etc.) This blog's look and posts will improve with practice and learning. I did a ton of research in an attempt to learn how to be a better blogger, and how to promote my art, and I found a lot of useful advice, which I will share with you below.
